Mom rages when 21-year-old daughter refuses to continue cleaning up after 19-year-old stepbrother: 'She tells me he's adjusting'

Every capable adult should be contributing to the upkeep of their household.

Something that most people learn pretty fast when they start to live independently is that it takes a lot of work to keep a home looking half decent. There is always laundry to be folded, dishes to be done, or trash to be taken out. For those who do not have the resources to pay for help, chores can take up a significant part of their daily duties.

However, there are plenty of individuals who are all too content to live somewhere and not so much as lift a finger to make sure the place is clean and tidy. Almost everybody has dealt with a nightmare roommate or entitled family member who thinks that it is everybody else's job to act as their personal maid, as they leave a trail of chaos in every room that they spend time in.

Making a stand against this kind of behavior is not always easy. The messy person is likely to put up a fight, and what's worse, they sometimes get others defending them as well. It can get to a point where the only option seems to be a general chore strike until somebody has to give in.

In this story, a young woman had grown increasingly frustrated with her stepbrother, who had moved in with her and her mom a year ago. He never cleaned up after himself, leaving a mess everywhere in the house for his female relatives to deal with.
The woman was annoyed as her mom never allowed this behavior from her when she was growing up, but was willing to let him get away with it. The final straw came when she returned home from work to find burnt food on her expensive pans.
As a result, she decided she would no longer be doing dishes or cleaning common areas. Her mom accused her of being selfish, but she felt that she had reached her limit. She wanted confirmation that she wasn't in the wrong.
Am I wrong for refusing to clean up after my incapable stepbrother?
